About

On July 5, in Meșendorf – a Saxon village more than 703 years old, if we go by the charters, but who can count – we are organizing a brunch that does not promise revelations, but offers peace, taste and jokes that do not spoil in the heat.

It is not a festival, nor a retreat. It is a real brunch, inside a fortified church, with old walls and towers, green grass, rare butterflies on the meadows and housewives who cook with more care than a food stylist in natural light.

What is there to eat? Food made by people, not trends.

🎶 A quintet of pies, with rare flours and generous fillings: greens, vegetables, cheeses, meat and offal (for those who grew up with "eat it all or dad comes!").

🌿 Three carefully accompanied sauces: yogurt with tarragon (a fine classic), nettle pesto (a sincere green), and cherry sauce (for unexpected conversations).
🌿 Two brisk salads, with carrot and cucumber, as an intermezzo.

🥩 A duet of cold meats – mutton pastrami and Saxon minced meat steak, unpretentious but with a reputation.
🥄 The intrigue: arpacaș with pălinca, bellows cheese and dried plums. It seems like a joke, but it has its fans. Like sleeping at lunch: at first it seems strange, then you don't understand how you lived without it.

🥣 A trio of soups, one of them according to a Saxon recipe that has survived not only generations, but also uninspired weekends. Learned from Mrs. Marianne, who never wrote it down on paper, but knows it with her eyes closed.

🍞 Separate chapter, on its merits:
– Homemade pita, baked in a wood-fired oven, with a serious crust and a core that doesn't need topping.
– Pitutțe pe lespede, that is, the Transylvanian version of flatbread, slowly leavened, posted nowhere.
🍰 Desserts modest in appearance, not in effect: poppy seed cake, walnut cake, plus liqueur, which needs no explanation.
🧀 And between courses, in courses, at the beginning, at the end and (for some) on the way: the matured cheese from Meșendorf. It doesn't scream, but it makes itself heard. Matured right in the village. In cellars with natural coolness and silence. Three types, in small editions, made with raw milk from here, patience and skill: simple, with hay flowers or with pomace and dried fruits. They don't resemble each other. And none of them are like what you find in the store. I'm like Meșendorf: no noise, but with identity.
☕ To drink: coffee without forced branding, freshly milked milk, herbal teas from the garden (with a touch of cumin, just enough to remind you of your childhood) and choclate with fine bubbles – neither few nor with ego.

And yet, it's not just about the food.
It's about how you feel when you get out of rhythm.

🌳 You walk through an old orchard, with apple and pear trees that know more history than textbooks and admire the village above (this thing is addictive, like a song that obsesses you, we can testify).

🏰 You visit a fortified church that has seen wars, storms and many generations of teenagers without a signal. You learn how the village was defended from invasions before there were antiviruses and electric fences.

🏡 You enter a Saxon household – with thick beams, painted cupboards and objects that have not been “reconditioned”, only respected.
Your guide will be Mrs. Hermine Antoni – 83 years old, a former teacher and an essential presence for the memory of the place, who has humor, grace and knows the village inside and out, more like Google Maps.

We also have a workshop for children (and parents who don’t mind the activities)
How do you make a good school bag with homemade cheese, local herbs, vegetables, fruit and love? Simple. You have your child make it, you pretend to help them and then you post it with a “natural” filter. A hands-on moment in which children create their own combinations, and parents feel guilty for not doing this more often.

The event is organized by Meșendorf 65 – that is, some people who believe that old villages can be cool without forcing things -, with the help of the ladies from the Meșendorf Village Neighborhood, hosted by HOG Meschendorf in the fortified church and with the extraordinary participation of Mrs. Hermine Antoni. We all live here, we don't just show up at events.

A brunch with taste, peace and mature cheese. A cheese that accompanies you home. And that doesn't seem to be in a hurry to leave. We know, it's good, we've been told before.

So:
It's not a brunch like in the city. It's in the village, with thick walls, with stories, with tastes. It's a simple, good, and maybe, maybe, even memorable day.
We're waiting for you on July 5th. Bring your child, parent, friend. Or come alone, you won't feel that way.
